Poor Baby....

We had a long evening yesterday. On Monday, Justin started coughing pretty bad again so I made him a doctors appointment for 4pm yesterday. I seriously thought we would take him to the doctor adn they would tell us that I am being a neurotic mom and it's just a cold. Wrong!

She is treating him (and Rob & I) for Pertussis - more commonly known as Whooping Cough. It has NOT been confirmed yet because test results take at least a week. She said that based on his symptoms and the sound of the cough she is convinced this is what it is. So we went from the pediatrician's office to the hospital for a nasal swab test. No fun. Justin and I were both crying. I thought it would just be a painless quick test, but they put the swab so far up his nose :( He made it through and we had just gotten home when the hospital called and said that the lab accidentally did an influenza test on the swab instead of Pertussis....so back to the hospital we went to do the whole thing again. When we were there, Rob and I went into the ER and got a prescription for the antibiotic for ourselves so we don't pass this back and forth to eachother. This is a highly contagious "disease", which I hate that word but that is what everything I have read is calling it. We have medication for him (the pediatrician said she does not want to wait for the results before starting treatment) and have to watch him closely to make sure he does not have trouble breathing when trying to cough. He is in a pretty happy mood and does not act sick. He is congested and has the cough, but hopefully the antibiotics will take care of this. The other bad news is that Whooping cough is also known as "the 100 day cough". Great....

He is considered contagious until he's been on the medicine for 5 days...same for me and Rob. So he is home from day care and I will be working from home for a couple of days. I am glad that we took him in and caught it early, if it is in fact Pertussis. I would rather treat it and be safe rather than sorry.

So keep your fingers crossed that the results will come back negative!!

Sorry; no new pictures today. I will take some and post later.....

Oh, that poor little guy. Mother's intuition really paid off here. It's good you took him to the doctor before it got really bad.

I've always thought whooping cough was an 1800s-type disease. I didn't know it was still around today!
